my secong string of ruan broke...arg!!!
lucky is in e morning...
if during performance,
very paiseh de leh...
but because it is new string..
e sound is very odd n without playing it..it actually out of tune..
so during performance...
my second string produce high pitch..
abit paiseh...
dun dare to play loud...
after tt..
others went to music rm to discuss something..
i only noe is abt discussing abt e gd n bad points of each section of CO..
i only heard tt e sheng n suona section say tt their bad points was their instrument too shiny..
tts a bad point?

2 days ago...we had our performance at Jurong Police Station headquarter. The place..was like..in a polyclinic. not like a police station..e place was BIG!!!

5ppl from our ruan family participate in it...HuiYoke Fiona Liyan Qixin n me..tt cindy hor..pon this event..muz scold her le..total 37 peeps..=)

by e time we reach e place..we find tt we r e last..no choice ma..we came from woodlands...
then there is a sch with all e gu zhen..they play xi yang yang n gong xi fa cai..
me n fiona n qixin then sit together play e xi yang yang..we 3 chiang xiang with them..lame hor?

then we had a practice at e side..we play gong xi fa cai, bei jing xi xun chuan bian zai n jin she kuang wu..
obviously we r louder than e gu zhen la...

during perform: liyan change seat with me...wtf! say scare..hey..no more next time hor..i dun wish to sit at ur place hor..i prefer to sit the second row first seat..not first row!

oh..forget to add in something..
we are now learning our SYF song..call Gong Zhu..princess...
nex yr SYF..our aim is gold with honours or gold..last yr we gt silver n we make our instructors loss face..

a gd start 4 us..2day is a rare opportunity 4 us,as 2day minister come n watch us perform..we r e 1st to do e fusion in secondary sch level..horrays!
it is a gd start;beginning...we still hav a long way to go..
our next performance will b on national day n e exchange program wif evgpri,wdlpri n 2 other china schs which will b held on august...jiayou!

this week instrument is: liu qin~ 柳琴

The name "liuqin" comes from the fact that the instrument is made of willow wood and shaped like a willow leaf (the willow is called the liu in Chinese). In fact, it is also known as the liuyeqin 柳叶琴 ("willow-leaf stringed instrument"). The structure of the liuqin is similar to that of the larger pipa, from which it was derived during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD). It is played with a plectrum, and originally had two or three strings before a fourth string was added in the 1950s.

Crisp and bright, the liuqin is the highest-pitched member of the plucked strings but its volume is relatively small, making it more suitable for solo pieces or passages.

柳琴属于琵琶类弹拨乐器，因使用柳木制作，外形也类似柳叶的形状，因而被称为柳琴，或“柳叶琴”。柳琴的外形和构造与琵琶极为相似。最早的柳琴，构造非常简单，由于柳琴的外形土里土气，非常民间化，中国老百姓亲切地称它“土琵琶”。“土琵琶”长期流传在中国山东、安徽和江苏一带的民间，用于伴奏地方戏曲。　　柳琴不仅在外形和构造上与琵琶相同，演奏方法也和琵琶一样，只是演奏时用拨子弹拨。演奏柳琴时，演奏者要端坐，将柳琴斜放在胸前，左手持琴，手指按弦，右手把拨子夹在拇指和食指之间，弹拨琴弦，姿式非常幽雅。

　　今天，柳琴在中国音乐表演的领域里扮演着各种各样的角色。在民族乐队中，柳琴是弹拨类乐器组的高音乐器，有独特的声响效果，常常演奏高音区重要的主旋律。由于它的音色不易被其他乐器所掩盖和融合，有时还担任技巧性很高的华彩段落的演奏。另外，柳琴还具有西洋乐器曼陀林的音响效果，与西洋乐队合作，别有风味。

This week's instrument is....PiPa 琵琶

“琵”、“琶”是根据演奏这些乐器的右手技法而来的。
琵琶又称“批把。在古代，敲、击、弹、奏都称为鼓。当时的游牧人骑在马上好弹琵琶，因此为“马上所鼓也”。大约在魏晋时期，正式称为“琵琶”。
据史料记载，直项琵琶在中国出现得较早，秦、汉时期的“秦汉子”，是直柄圆形共鸣箱的直项琵琶（共鸣箱两面蒙皮），它是由秦末的弦鼗发展而来的。
到了公元五、六世纪随着中国与西域民族商业和文化交流的加强, 从中亚地区传入一种曲项琵琶, 当时称作 "胡琵琶"。。
中国古代诗词中有大量的记载。例如唐代诗人白居易在他的著名诗篇《琵琶行》中非常形象地对琵琶演奏及其音响效果这样的描述:“大弦嘈嘈如急雨，小弦切切如私语。嘈嘈切切错杂弹，大珠小珠落玉盘"。
到了唐代后期，在演奏技法上最突出的改革是由横抱演奏变为竖抱演奏，由手指直接演奏取代了用拨子演奏。同时它的颈部加宽，下部共鸣箱由宽变窄，便于左手按下部音位。由于以上这俩项改革，琵琶演奏技法得到了空前的发展。据统计琵琶的指法共有五六十种。归纳起来，右手指法分两个系统：一、轮指系统，二、弹挑系统。左手指法也分两个系统：一、按指系统，二、推拉系统。
到了公元二十世纪中后期，琵琶艺术又有了新的发展，在琵琶制作方面，原来用的丝质弦改成了尼龙钢丝弦，有的甚至采用银弦，加大了琵琶音量和共鸣。在技法上左手大拇指以及和弦的运用使琵琶的表现力再次大大提高。

The pipa - the Chinese lute - is a four-stringed plucked instrument originally designed to be played on horseback, and was introduced by the nomadic races of Central Asia in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 25 AD). Its name came from the two techniques for right-handed strumming: "pi" 枇 (leftward) and "pa" 杷 (rightward). There are 19 to 26 bamboo frets glued on its soundboard, which together with the 6 upper ledges are arranged as stops. In its original form, the pipa was played horizontally with a large plectrum on silk strings, and often had five strings. In the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD), it became popular to play the pipa vertically or diagonally, with the fingers or fingernails. The five-stringed pipa ceased to be played during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 AD).

Most pipa now use steel strings and are played with the fingernails. To avoid damaging the nails, plastic extensions are often taped to the fingers. Because it has a resonant, crisp, clear and enchanting timbre, the pipa is probably the best known among China's many plucked instruments. It also spread to Japan, where it was modified as the biwa. It has a wide range of playing techniques and is used commonly as a solo, ensemble and orchestral instrument.

Introduction
阮是中国的一种弹拨乐器，阮在古代一直被叫做“秦琵琶”。大约在公元前二三世纪的秦国时期，人们给一种有柄的小摇鼓加弦制成弹拨乐器，叫作“弦鼗（tao）”。后来人们又参考筝和筑等乐器，创制了一种比“弦鼗”更为先进的乐器，称为“秦琵琶”，它就是“阮”的前身。
在公元三世纪左右，有一位叫阮咸的音乐家，非常善于弹奏这种有圆形音箱的“秦琵琶”,由于他的演奏技艺非常高超，深受老百姓的喜爱，人们就渐渐用他的名字“阮咸”来称呼这种乐器了。不过，阮咸简称为阮是从一千年前的宋代才开始的。
Appearances
阮的外形很简单，由琴头、琴杆和琴身三个部分组成。琴头一般装饰有中国传统的龙或如意等骨雕艺术品，两侧装有四个弦轴。阮的琴身是一个扁圆形的共鸣箱，由面板、背板和框板胶合而成。阮的结构原理、制作材料以及演奏技法和琵琶都有很多相同之处。音箱圆形，十二个音柱，四弦，用假指甲或拨片弹，可用于独奏、重奏和歌舞半奏或参加民族乐队演奏，有丰富的艺术表现力。

近年来随着中国对民族乐器的重视，音乐家们还对阮进行了改革，研制出高音阮、中音阮、次中音阮和低音阮。
高音阮是高音乐器，发音清脆明亮，在乐队中常担任主旋律的演奏。
中阮为中音乐器，音色恬静柔和，富有诗意；在合奏中常担任演奏旋律和插曲，具有动人的效果。担任伴奏时，丰富的节奏变化能突出乐曲的特点，在乐队中采用两个以上中阮分部演奏和声，会使弹拨乐器组的中音部更为丰满。
大阮比中阮低五度，与西洋乐器中的大提琴比较相似，在乐队演奏旋律时，它常与中阮作八度结合，以加强中阮效果，最适宜映衬抒情的旋律，演奏单音或和弦时，能加强节奏，烘托出乐曲热烈奔放的效果。低音阮发音深沉而低侯，犹如西洋乐器中的低音提琴。

The ruan, a round four-stringed lute, was originally considered a form of pipa and called the Qin Pipa 秦琵琶. First played during the reign of Emperor Wu (140 - 88 BC) of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 25 AD), it owes its popularisation and its name to Ruan Xian 阮咸, one of the eccentric Western Jin (265 - 317 AD) intellectuals known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. Ruan was a master at this instrument, and a famous wall mural of the Seven Sages from a contemporary tomb shows him playing it. Hence the instrument came to be known as the ruanxian, or simply as the ruan.

The ruan has a straight stem, a round sound box and 24 frets. It is played with a plectrum, like a guitar. Five sizes of ruan are now produced - the soprano (gaoyinruan 高音阮), alto (xiaoruan 小阮 ) tenor (zhongruan 中阮), bass (daruan 大阮) and double bass (diyinruan 低音阮). This has widened the tonal range of the ruan family, although the zhongruan and daruan are used most often for their dulcet and mellow quality. It is usually played in orchestras or ensembles, but has also been used for solos in recent years. A similar version, called a yueqin 月琴 ("moon-shaped stringed instrument") , has a much shorter stem and no sound-holes.

Good Start

Abt 2 months ago, almost all of us in RuanRuan Family participate in SYF. At that time, we have a history of abt 8 months. We did a great jod by obtaining a Silver. It is a good start for CO in the 1st yr.I believe we can obtain a Gold in two yrs time or at least maintain the standard Silver.
